The tip formula
Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100 · Total = Bill + Tip · Per person = Total ÷ PeopleExample: four friends share a $120 dinner and want to leave 20%. The tip is 120 × 0.20 = $24, the total is $144, and each person pays $144 ÷ 4 = $36. For mental-math shortcuts, read how to calculate a tip in your head.

Should you tip before or after tax?
The traditional rule is to tip on the subtotal before tax, because tax is not part of the service. On most bills the difference is small: on an $80 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip is $16.00 before tax and $17.28 after. Our calculator handles both. Learn more in tip before or after tax.
